SANDWICH, England (AP) -- Colin Montgomerie lasted just seven holes at the British Open on Thursday, pulling out with an injured hand and knees after falling on the way to breakfast at his hotel.
According to tournament organizers, Monty tripped and took the impact of his fall on his hand and knees. He was 4-over when he withdrew.
The Scot who has carried the weight of British hopes since Nick Faldo faded six years ago, was driven off the Royal St. George's links for an X-ray while playing partners Brad Faxon and Steve Elkington carried on.
Montgomerie, whose own form has slumped in the past year, bogeyed the first two holes and double bogeyed the par 3 sixth after landing in heavy rough.
He has also pulled out of next week's Irish Open at Portmarnock, just outside Dublin.
