Future of the historic Bringhurst Golf Course in Louisiana is in doubt

The oldest par-3 golf course in the country might close after the family that has run it for half a century surrenders its lease.

ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) -- The future of the Bringhurst Golf Course, touted as the country's oldest par-3 course, is in doubt.

Jamie Trotter, the last in a line of a family that runs the course, said he has given up the family's longtime lease with the city.

"The main reason is the crime is so bad," Trotter said. "It's been getting worse the last three or four years. We had a Coke machine out there, and they'd tear into it. We'd get it fixed, and the next day, it would have been broken into again."

The Trotter family has had the lease on the course for almost 50 years.

"It was startling news when I heard about it," said Frank Brame, a top Louisiana amateur golfer who played often on the course.

But, he added, "it's hard for me to argue that it belongs there. I don't see it getting the proper amount of use."

Trotter said lack of play hasn't been a problem.

The city has not decided what to do with the course.
