CORONA, Calif. (AP) -- Orange County supervisors are buying Corona's Green River Golf Club, but it's not so they can hit the links.

The supervisors have allocated $22 million for the club with courses along the Santa Ana River as part of the county's flood control efforts. The facility includes two courses, the 6,480-yard, par-72 Orange Course, which was built in 1959, and the 6,490-yard, par-72 Riverside Course, which was built in 1992.

The club is just downstream from the massive Prado Dam. The dam already releases water into the river and floods the golf course during heavy rains.

But the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is about to raise the dam 30 feet. Public works officials say that could triple the dam's discharges.

Golfers can continue to use the golf courses, but officials say buying the club would allow the county to shut it down if necessary for flood control.

If the course stays in private hands, county officials fear they might have to take its operators to court in order to close it during a flood.
