INDIO, Calif. -- Construction is under way on the new Ka' We aH' Golf Course at the Fantasy Springs Casino Resort. The $10 million, 18-hole championship layout is scheduled to open this December on the eastern end of the Coachella Valley, with a formal grand opening celebration planned for January or February of 2007.

The course -- whose name comes from a phonetic spelling of Cahuilla, which means "Masters" or "Powerful Ones" -- is being built by the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians, who also own Fantasy Springs. Golf course architect Clive Clark is designing the 7,000-yard layout, which also will include a real estate component.

Four of the 18 holes will be routed through a 295-lot housing development, with 150 golf course frontage lots, officials said. A driving range, putting green, lakes and waterfalls also be included in the golf course development, which also will feature carvings that look like alluvial fans etched into the desert landscape.

Clark, a resident of nearby La Quinta and former British Ryder Cup player, recently created the "Clive" Course at The Hideaway Golf Club in La Quinta and the new West Course at The Golf Resort of Indian Wells.

For the 18th hole at Ka' We aH' Course, Clark is planning a tumbling water feature with a 30-foot drop, a design element he believes has yet to be tried in the United States. The waterfall will be designed so that golfers will drive their golf cars on a path that takes them out onto a lake and through a cave before they emerge with a spectacular back view of the massive waterfall.
