Bandon Dunes might be Oregon's most famous golf resort, but the Salishan Lodge and Golf Resort in Gleneden Beach is quickly making a name for itself in the wake of a now-complete multi-million dollar renovation project. Among the improvements, covered walkways that span the property have been restored with 125,000 board-feet of cedar, as specified by original designs, and are now illuminated. Roads and parking areas have been repaired, repaved and sealed, and the main lodge and several guestroom units have been repainted. The renovation also upgraded the Salishan Dining Room where Executive Chef Ken Martin's signature preparations of Pacific Northwest cuisine define the much-acclaimed menu. The resort's wine collection has been has been rebuilt and now exceeds 10,000 bottles, including an array of Oregon Pinot Noir and other Northwest wines. In addition, the Wine Cellar now hosts its own private dining area. Long regarded as one of the Pacific Northwest's finer golf courses, Salishan's links-style layout had become hindered by its 1960s-era design. Oregon native and PGA Tour veteran Peter Jacobsen and his design firm, Houston-based Jacobsen Hardy Golf Course Design, executed a $3 million renovation of the course that included rebuilding greens, repositioning bunkers and improving turf conditions. "One of our primary goals with the restoration of this course was to bring it into the 21st century. Technology of course design and maintenance had long since passed us by and we wanted to preserve Salishan's well-established place as one of the finest golf courses in the Pacific Northwest," said Mark Swift, PGA Professional and Salishan's director of golf.
