Troon Golf is continuing its European expansion with its first management contract in Portugal. Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, which is being developed by the Portuguese company Aliber S.G.P.S. Lda, will encompass more than 1,000 acres of countryside on the southern coast of Portugal. The property already is being touted as one of the premier golf resorts in Europe. Located in the eastern Algarve between Vila Real de Santo Antonio and Tavira, Monte Rei Golf & Country Club will feature two golf courses -- the first being a Jack Nicklaus Signature design slated to open in the fall of 2006. Plans call for the second course to be built on the southern end of the development upon completion of the first. The Nicklaus course, situated on the north end of the development, will feature five lakes bordered by indigenous trees and plants, and will offer players views of the sea against a backdrop of the Serra do Caldierao mountains. The development also will feature an abundance of landscaped gardens and grasslands areas, and will offer home settings amongst natural Algarvian plants and vegetation, bordered by indigenous trees such as umbrella pines, and cork and olive trees. Troon Golf, based in Scottsdale, Ariz., manages operations at more than 160 courses in 27 states and 18 countries. These include the Westin Turnberry Resort in Ayrshire, Scotland; Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point, Calif.; Lake of Isles in North Stonington, Conn.; The Ridge at Castle Pines North in Castle Rock, Colo.; Palmilla Golf Club in Los Cabos, Mexico; and Bearwood Lakes Golf Club in Berkshire, England.
