Mayakoba, a luxurious new golf resort on the Riviera Maya, will welcome guests for the first time in December, when the Fairmont Mayakoba opens its doors, soon after an 18-hole Greg Norman Championship Golf Course named El Camaleon opens for play. The resort eventually also will be home to four other luxury hotels, including Laguna Kai (2007), Banyan Tree Mayakoba (2007), La Casa Que Canta (2007) and Viceroy Mayakoba (2008). All the hotels on the resort will be located on freshwater lagoons leading to a beach and the Caribbean Sea, and guests will be transported through resort canals via custom-built mahogany gondolas. The golf course layout is unique, as it bends through three distinct landscapes and is balanced so that it is enjoyable for golfers of all abilities. The golf facility also includes a driving range and the Mayan-influenced clubhouse that rises above the 18th green. And using the canal system, golfers will be able to step out of their rooms and into a boat that will ferry them to the first tee -- located on a cenote, the naturally occurring freshwater caves unique to the Yucatan Peninsula. In addition to golf and exploring the cenotes, mangrove forests and beach, visitors will be able to enjoy lunch at the stylish bar at Viceroy's Beach Club overlooking the ocean, get a spa treatment at the legendary Banyan Tree, catch a nap in a Fairmont casita or indulge in a candlelit dinner at one of Rosewood's two restaurants.
