ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) -- Defending champion Diane Lang and seven-time USGA champion Carol Semple Thompson won third-round matches Tuesday to advance to a quarterfinals matchup at the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur.
Lang, 51, of Weston Fla., routed Boodie McGurn, 53, of Richmond, Va., 7 & 5, on the 5,832-yard, par-71 Seaside Course. Thompson, 57, of Sewickley, Pa., got past Carolyn Creekmore, 54, of Dallas, 3 & 1, to set up a rematch of last year's final.
"I know its going to be fun," said Lang, who is trying to become the seventh repeat winner in tournament history. "I'm hitting the ball pretty well, so I think I have a 50-50 chance. Im going to give it my best shot."
Last year, Lang's par putt on the 18th hole in Rye, N.Y., gave her a 1-up victory and denied Thompson her fifth Senior Women's Amateur title.
"I know I'm going to have to play well because Diane is a very strong player," said Thompson, who won four straight titles, from 1999 to 2002. "Hopefully, well have a good match."
Toni Weisner, 59, of Fort Worth, Texas, got past Nancy Smith, 95, of North Port, Fla., 1-up, and will face 55-year-old Marianne Towersey, of Newport Beach, Calif. Towersey defeated Sandy Woodruff, 57, of Santa Cruz, Calif., 4 & 3.
Marianne Springer, 61, of Wellington, Fla., beat 60-year-old stroke-play medalist Cecilia Morgue D'Algue, of France, 4 & 3. Springer will face Deborah Anderson, 55, of Rancho Mirage, Calif. Anna Schultz, of Rockwall, Texas, will play Patty Moore, of Charlotte, N.C., in the other quarterfinal.
