Royal Trophy team event postponed after Thai princess dies of cancer

The Royal Trophy features teams from Asia and Europe in a three-day Ryder Cup-style team competition.

BANGKOK, Thailand (PA) -- The third edition of the Royal Trophy, due to be staged Jan. 11-13 at the Amata Spring Country Club, has been postponed, tournament officials have announced. No make-up date has yet been announced.

The country is in a period of mourning following the death of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The Princess passed away on Jan. 2 after receiving treatment for abdominal cancer in the hospital for the last six months. She was 84.

The Thai government announced a 15-day mourning period and asked that festive activities be suspended during this time as a mark of respect.

The Royal Trophy features teams from Asia and Europe in a three-day Ryder Cup-style team competition.

European Captain Seve Ballesteros leads a team that includes Darren Clarke, Niclas Fasth, Anders Hansen, Gregory Havret, David Howell, Raphael Jacquelin, Robert Karlsson, Paul McGinley and Graeme Storm.

The Asian team, led by Captain Naomichi Joe Ozaki of Japan, includes Jeev Milkha Singh and Shiv Kapur of India; Thongchai Jaidee, Prayad Marksaeng and Chapchai Nirat of Thailand; Lee Dong-hwan and Charlie Wi of Korea; and Toru Taniguchi and Hideto Tanihara of Japan.
