PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The rain held off early in the day Sunday and players were able to finish their third rounds at the 19th Callaway Golf Senior PGA Professional National Championship. Bill Loeffler, owner and operator of the Highlands Ranch (Colo.) Golf Club, fired his second consecutive 6-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Chris Starkjohann of Cardiff by the Sea, Calif., who carded a 68.

"I was pretty fortunate during my second round, where I made some good putts that normally would not go in, so I got pretty lucky," said Loeffler, the 1992 National Assistant Professional Champion.

Loeffler's third round was highlighted by seven birdies and only a single bogey.

"I have finally been hitting some good iron shots in this third round, which I haven't been able to do in awhile," said Loeffler.
Starkjohann, coming off a second place finish in last year's Senior PGA Professional National Championship, moved into second place after his third consecutive round in the 60s.

"I hit the ball pretty straight, so a whole lot of courses fit my eye well, including these [Ryder and Wanamaker]," said Starkjohann. "I got off to a good scoring start, getting it to 2-under through four holes when I could have easily been even par."

Bill Britton of Tinton Falls, N.J., Wayne DeFrancesco of Columbia, Md. And Freddy Gibson of Orlando, Fla. are each tied for third place are each tied for third place at 9-under 207.

Players returned to the course at 10:00 a.m. so that the damp course could dry. The final round began at 10:30 a.m. with the leaders going out at 11:32 a.m.

Callaway Golf is in its sixth year as the title sponsor of the Senior PGA Professional National Championship.

The low 35 finishers will qualify for the 2008 Senior PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club [East Course] in Rochester, N.Y. The top eight finishers, including ties, will receive exemptions into the 2008 Callaway Golf Senior PGA Professional Championship. In addition, the top 10 finishers will be exempt into the Champions Tour National Finals at TPC Eagle Trace, provided they have filled out an entry by the deadline.
