PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - After sitting through almost 3 hours of rain delays on Friday afternoon, first-round leader Bob Ford, PGA Head Professional at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club and Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla., posted a second round 1-under-par 71 to tie Wayne DeFrancesco, the PGA Director of Instruction at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md. for the lead at 7-under-par 135 following the conclusion of play in the 19th Callaway Golf Senior PGA Professional National Championship. Ford finished nine holes before play was suspended due to darkness on Friday and finished his remaining holes Saturday morning.
"I got off to a bad start yesterday. I missed my first green of the tournament on the first hole and made bogey," said Ford. "I thought I might feel a little better today, but I was still a bit shaky."
Ford still credits much of his early success to his friend and fellow PGA Professional Bob Boyd of Wilmington, N.C. Boyd was the 1988 PGA Professional National Champion and is making his return to national championship competition after surviving a second bout with leukemia.
"Bob is a dear and old friend and it is inspiring to see where he has come from," said Ford, whose opening round 64 was the lowest of any round in the 31-year Championship history. "I spent all day rooting for him and it kind of took my mind away from my game."
Freddy Gibson of Orlando, Fla. and Robert Thompson of Huntsville, Texas sit in a tie for third place, one shot off the pace.
"Today I made a few putts, which were not dropping yesterday," said Gibson, a PGA Life Member. "It is nice knowing the greens, with me living here in Florida. The ball can break a whole lot quickly and the greens are really grainy, so it is definitely a big help."
Heavy rain suspended play for 2 hours, 45 minutes at The PGA Golf Club, with 132 players unable to complete the second round on Friday.
Play resumed at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning, with a field of 264 trimmed to the low 70 scorers and ties. The third round is slated to begin at 11:50 a.m with 93 players making the cut.
Callaway Golf is in its sixth year as the title sponsor of the Senior PGA Professional National Championship.
The low 35 finishers will qualify for the 2008 Senior PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club [East Course] in Rochester, N.Y. The top eight finishers, including ties, will receive exemptions into the 2008 Callaway Golf Senior PGA Professional Championship. In addition, the top 10 finishers will be exempt into the Champions Tour National Finals at TPC Eagle Trace, provided they have filled out an entry by the deadline.
