PGA Championship Notebook: Duval's year just gets worse

Plus, a costly penalty for Baddeley, a tough week for PGA Professionals, the toughest and easiest holes, and more.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Sports Network) -- David Duval withdrew from the PGA Championship after four holes Friday citing a back injury. He was 16-over par through 22 holes of the season's fourth major championship when he walked off the course.

Duval shot himself out of the tournament with a 10-over-par 80 on Thursday at Oak Hill Country Club, but things did not get better on Friday. He double bogeyed the first, triple bogeyed the third hole and bogeyed the fourth, then picked up his ball after his tee shot on the fifth.

The former British Open champion and No. 1 player in the world said he aggravated the back problem last week at The International. He missed 10 weeks in the 2000 campaign with back pain but came back the next year by winning the British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.

The 2003 season has been a disaster for Duval. He is 197th on the money list and has made the cut three times in 17 stroke-play starts. Duval has broken 70 only three times this year.

COSTLY PENALTY: Aaron Baddeley looked to be in great shape after Thursday's opening-round 69 but things took a turn for the worse right away Friday.

The Australian was 40 seconds late for his tee time Friday morning and was docked the two strokes. Playing partner Jeff Maggert sent his caddie to try and get Baddeley before the penalty took effect but to no avail.

"I was a little annoyed walking down the first," Baddeley said. "The past is past, and you can't change that. I just got the wrong tee time."

Baddeley was scheduled to go off at 7:30 a.m. ET Friday morning but he thought his start time was five minutes later.

The penalty seemed to impact Baddeley's round. The young Aussie recorded two double bogeys and three bogeys for a round of 7-over-par 77. He finished 36 holes at 6-over-par 146 and is tied for 39th place.

HARDEST HOLE: The hardest hole through two rounds at Oak Hill Country Club is the 495-yard, par-4 17th, playing to a stroke average of 4.6. The easiest hole of the championship has been the 571-yard, par-5 fourth hole, which has played to an average of 5.1

ON-COURSE EMERGENCY: Before the group of Tiger Woods, David Toms and defending champion Rich Beem teed off No. 1, there was an emergency in the gallery. A woman passed out and the players waited a little while before hitting their first balls.

ON THE CLOCK: That same group was put on the clock for a period of time Friday. Woods said that when he was put on the clock for slow play in the final round of the British Open, he began to rush shots and it took him out of his rhythm.

PGA PROFESSIONALS: PGA Professional Wayne DeFrancesco, the Club Professional Champion in 2001, withdrew due to the death of his mother-in-law late Thursday night. And none of the PGA of America club professionals survived the 36-hole cut.
