JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) -- Warren Abery of South Africa shot a 5-under 66 Wednesday for a three-stroke lead in the British Open International final qualifying tournament. The 36-hole event concludes Thursday.

Bruce Vaughan of the United States joined a group of six players at 2-under 69. The others, all South Africans, are Henk Alberts, Bradford Vaughan, Desmond Terblanche, Werner Geyer and Ross Wellington. Terblanche and Bradford Vaughan are both multiple winners on the Southern Africa Tour, while the others are younger players.

Doug McGuigan of Scotland and Adilson Da Silva of Brazil each shot 70 at the event held at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Clubs, and are tied for eighth place. McGuigan claimed the final British Open spot in the 2005 tournament at Atlantic Beach.

Abery, playing in his first British Open qualifier, is the reigning Telkom PGA champion on the Southern Africa circuit, and has earned his 2006 European Tour card. He plans to play on the European circuit in the coming months.

International final qualifying tournaments in Africa, Asia and Australasia allow players to join the British Open field of 156 at the July 20-23 competition at Royal Liverpool, England. Four players among the field of 38 in South Africa this week will advance to the Open.
