LONDON (PA) -- Peter Benka, who was set to become president of the English Golf Union in February, has died at the age of 61 after a battle with cancer. A member of the 1969 Walker Cup team, Benka's England career saw him lose only seven of 29 matches. He also was the British Youth champion on two occasions. He worked as a stockbroker and a director of Credit Lyonnais Securities, but combined that with golf administration for the EGU and the Royal and Ancient Club. After first becoming an England selector in 1993, he took over as chairman the following year and went on to chair the R&A's Selection Committee. His wife Pam represented Great Britain & Ireland in the Curtis Cup. Copyright 2007 PA Sport. All rights reserved.
