UST Proforce V2 graphite shaft helps increase ball speed with less spin

The low-torque Proforce V2 shaft balances torque, weight, spin and launch angle to help produce a tighter shot pattern.

Shaft manufacturer United Sports Technologies is making its Proforce V2 graphite shaft, one of the more talked-about shafts on the PGA Tour, available to golfers and custom clubmakers.

The Proforce V2, according to UST, is a powerful, low-torque golf shaft that balances torque, weight, spin and launch angle. The result, UST said, is a high-performance graphite shaft that offers higher launch angles and increased ball speed with less spin for a tighter shot pattern.

"The V2 incorporates all of our advanced technologies, and it is the most extraordinary graphite shaft in golf today. The end result is super low-torque horsepower shaft that increases ball speed for all golfers," said Gene Simpson, vice president of sales and marketing for UST.

One of the performance-enhancing characteristics of the new Proforce V2, Simpson said, is its low-torque design -- the 75-gram model features 2.2 degrees of torque as compared to the classic Proforce Gold 75 at 3.4 degrees -- that is optimized in each V2 model to work with today's 400cc to 460cc driver heads.

The trend in larger driver and fairway wood heads has increased "hit-ability" for many golfers, but Simpson said, in most of these larger heads, the center of gravity has been moved farther away from the center line of the shaft. This design factor places more stress and causes more twisting in the shaft.

The V2's design, according to Simpson, provides the power and control needed for today's 400cc to 460cc heads. Also, he said, because the low-torque V2 prevents club heads from twisting open on impact, the V2 limits the amount of backspin, transferring more energy to the ball at impact.

"The flex engineering of the V2 creates a more sensitive feel, yet the real benefit is the shaft's ability to generate more power and distance," added Don Rahrig, vice president of engineering for UST. "The shaft's tip section has been optimized as well with more flexibility than the original Proforce Gold. The result is increased ball speed and a higher ball launch, which is another key to increasing distance."

Proforce V2 graphite shafts are now available in 55-, 65-, 75-, 85- and 95-gram models at golf shops and component distributors around the world. From shaft weights that help optimize both distance and control to light weight models that enhance swing speed and distance, there is an optimum weight for every golfer.

The Proforce V2 carries a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $90.
