Shaft manufacturer Aerotech is introducing its ultra-light SteelFiber i70 iron shaft, company officials have announced. The new shaft incorporates the same innovative SteelFiber technology as its predecessors, the i80 and i95, but at a substantially lower weight. The i70 weighs in at 75 grams and has more than 59 miles of micro thin steel fiber applied to the surface of each shaft, officials said. That gives the shaft the stability and control of a steel shaft but the distance and vibration dampening characteristics of an all-graphite shaft. "As we have gotten more proficient working with the steel fiber material, we have been able to stretch the design limits, making it possible to reach this lighter weight," said Chris Hilleary, vice president of Aerotech's golf division. "Our most critical design feature for this shaft was not just hitting the weight target but also maintaining the control and consistency that the SteelFiber shaft has become known for." Hilleary said the i70 shaft is designed with a slightly more active tip than the i80 and i95 models, which allows slower swing speed players to load the shaft more effectively during the swing and get the most out of their irons. Hilleary said this makes the i70 a perfect match for players looking to pick up distance in their irons yet not give up the control and consistency found in heavier weight shafts. The i70 (suggested retail price $27.50 per shaft) is produced in .370" parallel tip in S, R and A flexes. Copyright 2005 PGA.com. All rights reserved.
