Following up on the success of its King Cobra SS irons, Cobra Golf -- a division of the Acushnet Company -- is introducing its King Cobra SS-i irons, company officials have announced. The new irons deliver a "variety of key enhancements'' to the original design, they said.
The King Cobra SS-i iron line features an even larger sweet spot, softer feel and custom fitting options, they explained. The irons are designed for middle-handicap players seeking to improve their games.
The addition of a urethane insert to the backs of the new King Cobra SS-i irons helps absorb the vibration associated with thin-face, large cavity irons. The insert, in combination with a softer 431-alloy construction and slightly stronger lofts, promotes longer distance and softer feel, officials said.
The softer alloy, used in place of the more standard 17-4 steel, also allows custom fit lie options, while a cavity "muscle arch" provides enhanced perimeter weighting for a larger sweet spot and greater forgiveness. The new irons also retain the original skid sole design that promotes solid contact and helps prevent thin and fat shots.
"We implemented a deep undercut on the King Cobra SS-i irons to thin out the oversized face and create an expanded, hotter sweet spot," said Cobra General Manager Jeff Harmet. "The muscle arch pushes more weight to the perimeter which also expands the sweet spot and creates more distance and greater accuracy. The urethane insert provides for better feel at impact.''
The King Cobra SS-i men's irons are designed with an Aldila HM Tour Graphite shaft (75 grams) or Precision Microtaper Steel shaft (105g ) from 3-PW, with a 2-iron, gap, sand and lob wedges also available. The Senior and Women?s sets feature lighter weight Aldila HM Tour graphite shafts (70g for seniors, 55g for women's), and are designed with more offset and wider soles for custom slow swing speed performance, greater carry distance and accuracy.
The irons are now available in select golf shops nationwide with a suggested retail price of $559 for men's (steel) and $684 for men's, senior and women's (graphite) per set of eight clubs.
