Ping Golf is introducing its new G2 stainless steel fairway woods featuring variable sole thickness, a patent pending innovation that company officials said helps golfers hit longer, higher-launching shots. The fairway wood series offers golfers the choice of two 3-woods (12 and 14 degrees), 5-wood (17 degrees), 7-wood (20 degrees), 9-wood (23 degrees) and L-wood (26 degrees).
"We engineered these clubs with all golfers in mind," said Ping Golf Chairman John Solheim. "The look and shape appeal to better players. The larger head makes them extremely forgiving and easy to hit. The accuracy and distance the clubs provide will benefit everyone."
With the variable sole thickness, Solheim said, weight is moved toward the back of the club and positioned low to create less spin for added distance and a higher launch angle. The higher the club's loft, the farther back the weight and center of gravity are moved.
"Golfers rely on their fairway woods from a variety of distances and lies," Solheim added. "Ensuring these clubs performed from all conditions was a key challenge for our engineers. Golfers will find the G2 fairway woods easy to hit from the fairway, rough and firm lies."
Solheim said playability is improved through the multi-radius lead edge. Similar to the lead edge technology introduced in the i3+ irons, Solheim said, the G2 Fairway wood lead edge lowers the face surface to improve the club's movement through turf for more consistent ball contact.
The custom-fit metal woods are available in three color codes (lie angles) to match a golfer's stance and swing for maximum performance. The new TFC 100 graphite shaft (S-Flex) is standard in the series. The JZ steel shaft is also available.
Suggested retail is $200 per club (steel) and $260 (graphite). The fairway woods are expected to begin appearing in select golf shops nationwide in early October.
