In the first of two major product introductions this summer, Callaway Golf Company (NYSE: ELY) has unveiled its much-anticipated HX Tour 56 golf ball, which already has won nine events across the six major worldwide pro tours this year. The HX Tour 56, which Phil Mickelson has used since last fall, will begin shipping next month with a suggested retail price of $50 per dozen. Callaway is expected to introduce the new Fusion FT-3 driver, used by Annika Sorenstam among others, within the next few weeks. The HX Tour 56 ball, according to Callaway officials, has a softer feel and more spin than the HX Tour ball, while delivering comparable distance. A new proprietary manufacturing process known as RIM (Reaction Injection Molding) Technology allows engineers to make the HX Tour 56 ball with an ultra-thin, exceptionally soft cover, they said. The thin cover helps produce low spin and high speed off the driver for maximum distance, they said. And at the same time, Callaway said, the cover makes the ball feel softer and spin more on shorter shots, a combination many players look for in a high-performance golf ball. The HX Tour 56 ball also shares the revolutionary HEX Aerodynamics of the HX Tour. HEX Aerodynamics, according to Callaway, replaces conventional dimples and virtually eliminates the ball's seam, enhancing shot-to-shot consistency. Callaway said the design also produces 100 percent surface area coverage, contributing to reduced drag for longer ball flight with high stability, even in the windiest conditions.
